Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A major tragedy was narrowly averted at Kannad Ghat in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district after a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus carrying 59 passengers lost control and came dangerously close to plunging into a deep gorge.
The bus was travelling from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Surat when the incident occurred on Sunday. According to reports, the driver encountered a sudden problem with the steering system while negotiating the ghat road. The bus moved towards the edge before being stopped by a roadside safety barrier.
The vehicle remained precariously positioned near the gorge, triggering panic among passengers. Some reportedly escaped through the windows as efforts were made to evacuate everyone safely.
All 59 passengers were eventually rescued. Four passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, with their condition reported to be stable.
Another report said the bus was prevented from plunging further after colliding with a large tree, while local residents also rushed to the spot and helped passengers escape.
Police reached the scene and began investigating the incident. Officials are examining whether a steering-rod failure or another mechanical problem caused the driver to lose control.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by vehicles navigating the steep and winding Kannad Ghat route. What could have resulted in a major loss of life ended with passengers making a narrow escape.
