New Delhi: India is observing National Sports Day on Saturday to commemorate the 121st birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, whose extraordinary contribution to Indian sport continues to inspire athletes across generations.
Remembering the hockey wizard
Born on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Chand became one of the most celebrated figures in Indian hockey. His remarkable skills helped India establish its dominance in international hockey during the early 20th century.
He was part of the Indian teams that won Olympic gold medals in hockey at Amsterdam in 1928, Los Angeles in 1932 and Berlin in 1936. His performances earned him the enduring reputation of the ‘Wizard of Hockey’.
National Sports Day was established in his memory and has grown into a nationwide occasion celebrating not only sporting achievements but also fitness, discipline, teamwork and participation.
Sports Day takes a wider message
This year’s celebrations are centred on the nationwide ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ initiative, encouraging citizens, particularly young people, to spend at least one hour participating in sports or physical activity. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya led celebrations at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to Dhyan Chand, saying his brilliance and contribution to Indian hockey continue to inspire generations.
Across India, schools, sports institutions and communities are marking the occasion through sporting activities and programmes designed to encourage greater participation.
