Paschim Medinipur: A close associate of Trinamool Congress leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee has been booked in a fraud and forgery case in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district, police officials said on Sunday.

The accused, Sumit Roy, who is already facing legal scrutiny in a separate land-grab case, has been named in a fresh complaint registered at Debra Police Station. Authorities said investigations are underway and all allegations mentioned in the complaint are being examined.

The latest development adds to the legal challenges facing Roy, who has reportedly been absconding for some time.

Fresh complaint filed at Debra police station

According to police officials, the new case involves allegations of fraud and forgery made by a complainant in Paschim Medinipur district.

A police officer said the complaint was formally registered at Debra Police Station, following which an investigation was initiated.

Officials have not disclosed the complete details of the allegations, citing the ongoing nature of the probe.

However, investigators confirmed that the complaint includes accusations of cheating and document-related forgery against Roy.

Sumit Roy already facing land-grab allegations

The latest case comes shortly after Roy was booked in a separate land-grab case.

In connection with that investigation, the West Bengal Police had reportedly issued a lookout notice against him.

Police teams also conducted search operations at locations linked to Roy in an attempt to trace his whereabouts.

One such operation included a search at the Kolkata residence of Abhishek Banerjee as investigators sought to locate the accused.

Authorities have maintained that the searches were part of routine investigative procedures linked to the ongoing cases.

Former MLA also named in complaint

Police said former Medinipur MLA Sujoy Hazra has also been named in the fraud and forgery complaint.

Hazra was recently arrested by Shalboni Police in connection with another case.

Investigators are expected to examine the role of all individuals named in the complaint as part of the inquiry.

Officials stated that questioning of relevant persons would be conducted to establish facts and determine whether any offences were committed.

CID monitoring developments

A senior official from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said the agency is closely examining the allegations contained in the complaint.

The official stated that all available documents and evidence related to the case are being collected and scrutinised.

“We are looking into the contents of the complaint and collecting all relevant documents. Every allegation will be verified based on evidence, and appropriate legal action will follow,” the official said.

The CID has indicated that it will provide assistance to local police if required during the course of the investigation.

Investigation underway

Police officials said the investigation remains at a preliminary stage and no conclusions have been drawn regarding the allegations.

Authorities are currently gathering documents, recording statements and verifying claims made in the complaint.

Investigators are expected to determine whether the allegations of fraud and forgery can be substantiated through documentary and witness evidence.

Officials have stressed that legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

Political attention on the case

The case has attracted political attention because of Roy’s association with Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee.

However, police have not indicated any involvement of Banerjee in the allegations under investigation.

The focus of the inquiry remains on the individuals named in the complaint and the specific allegations raised by the complainant.

Political observers are expected to closely monitor further developments as the investigation progresses.

Conclusion

The registration of a fraud and forgery case against Sumit Roy marks the latest legal challenge for the close aide of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. With police and CID officials examining the allegations and collecting evidence, the investigation is expected to determine the validity of the claims and any potential legal consequences for those named in the complaint.
