KRISHNAGIRI: Following public outcry and a media report, the Bettamugilalam Government High School in Denkanikottai taluk on Friday admitted three Class 9 students who were earlier denied entry for failing an unlawful screening test.
The issue gained attention after The New Indian Express highlighted how students from two Panchayat Union Middle Schools — Bolakollai and Siddhapuram — were turned away by the high school. The screening test, allegedly conducted by the school’s headmaster Madhu, was aimed at filtering out students with low academic performance to boost the school’s Class 10 exam results.
The denial of admission came to light when a complaint was lodged via the child helpline. Further investigation revealed an additional affected student. All four — including one who wasn’t made to take the test — have now been admitted.
To support their learning, the students will receive foundational workbooks, and a bridge course will be conducted. A Kelamangalam block education official confirmed that more students from PUM schools showing weak academic skills will receive similar support and Class 9 admissions.
Acting Chief Education Officer A Muniraj said Urdu-medium students joining Tamil-medium schools will also be placed in bridge programs lasting two to six months.
