A shocking murder–suicide involving a newly married couple has shaken Ahmedabad, after a Class-I government officer allegedly shot his wife before taking his own life inside their apartment late on Wednesday night.
Argument turns fatal inside apartment
Police identified the deceased as Yashrajsinh Gohil, an officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board, and his wife Rajeshwari Gohil. The couple had been married for just two months. According to preliminary findings, a heated argument broke out between them at their residence. During the altercation, Yashrajsinh allegedly used his licensed revolver and fired at his wife.
Emergency call and tragic aftermath
After the shooting, Yashrajsinh reportedly dialled the 108 emergency service. Medical personnel who arrived at the flat declared Rajeshwari dead on arrival. Police said that after the emergency team left, Yashrajsinh went into another room and shot himself with the same firearm, dying instantly.
Family in shock, probe underway
Yashrajsinh was the nephew of senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said the family was in deep shock and described Yashrajsinh as a cheerful individual who had recently secured his government posting and was preparing for the UPSC examinations. He added that the couple appeared to be living happily and were planning an overseas holiday.
Police, however, stated that all possibilities are being examined. They are verifying the firearm licence, analysing the 108 call records, and recording statements from family members to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.
Mental health support stressed
Authorities reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and timely intervention, urging individuals experiencing emotional distress to seek professional help without hesitation.
Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is ongoing.
