Pizza lovers travelling on select Air India international flights have a new reason to look forward to their onboard meal. The airline has introduced wood-fired, stone-baked pizzas as part of its continuing effort to refresh the inflight dining experience.
The move adds a familiar comfort food to long-haul journeys, where airlines face the challenge of preparing and serving meals in the limited space of an aircraft galley.
Pizza takes off on select North America routes
The pizzas are being introduced on select flights connecting India with North America, including routes between Delhi and New York, San Francisco and Delhi, Newark and Mumbai, Toronto and Delhi, and Vancouver and Delhi.
The offering is available to passengers travelling in Economy and Premium Economy on applicable services, making the experience accessible beyond the premium cabins.
Air India has been expanding its international food programme, combining Indian regional dishes with European and pan-Asian options. The airline’s refreshed global menu includes dishes such as an Awadhi Thali, Japanese Teppanyaki Bowl and Chicken Bibimbap.
A fresh take on airline food
The pizza offering reflects a wider shift in how airlines are approaching inflight dining. Preparing food at 35,000 feet comes with practical limitations involving storage, space, reheating and presentation.
Air India’s broader culinary programme has focused on improving ingredient quality, presentation and galley processes while bringing a wider variety of regional and international flavours to passengers.
The airline has also expanded its international dining programme across routes serving destinations including New York, Toronto, Vancouver and San Francisco.
More choices are coming onboard
The pizzas are part of Air India’s wider transformation of its passenger experience. The airline says its refreshed menus combine India’s culinary diversity with global influences, while offering different choices across cabins and dietary requirements.
For passengers on long international journeys, the addition of pizza offers a simple and familiar choice that could make the hours in the air a little more enjoyable.
With airlines increasingly competing on the overall passenger experience, what is served on the tray table is becoming an important part of the journey. For pizza lovers, Air India’s latest offering could make a long-haul flight feel a little more like home.
