Guwahati: Air India Express on Thursday announced the cancellation of its Guwahati–Hyderabad flight (IX 2884) citing “unforeseen operational reasons,” shortly after Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj publicly criticised the airline for delaying the flight without proper communication to passengers. The incident has drawn significant attention, with many passengers echoing similar concerns about the transparency of flight operations.
Airline cites operational issues after passenger backlash
According to Air India Express, the flight scheduled to depart on Wednesday evening could not operate due to last-minute operational challenges. The airline said its staff at the airport were assisting passengers with alternative arrangements, including refunds and rebooking options.
In a statement posted under Siraj’s complaint on X, the airline said, “We regret to inform you that the flight has been cancelled due to unforeseen operational reasons. Our team at the airport is actively assisting all guests with the necessary arrangements… We truly appreciate your patience and understanding.”
While the airline assured continued updates, passengers alleged that there was little to no communication for several hours before the cancellation was confirmed.
Mohammed Siraj voices frustration over delay
Mohammed Siraj, a fast bowler for the Indian cricket team, took to X on Wednesday night to express his disappointment with the airline. He stated that the flight, scheduled for departure at 7.25 pm, was delayed repeatedly without clear explanation.
“Air India flight no. IX 2884 from Guwahati to Hyderabad was supposed to take off at 7.25. However, there has been no communication from the airline… After repeatedly following up, they have just delayed the flight with no proper reasoning,” Siraj posted.
He added that the delay had stretched to four hours with “no update,” leaving passengers stranded at the airport. “Worst airline experience. I really would not advise anyone to take this flight if they can’t take a stand,” he wrote.
Passengers report similar grievances
Several passengers at the Guwahati airport also expressed frustration over the lack of timely alerts or announcements regarding the delay. Many claimed they were only informed after repeated inquiries, and some said they feared the delay would eventually lead to cancellation—something the airline later confirmed.
Instances of operational delays and communication lapses have been reported by travellers on various domestic routes in recent months. Aviation experts note that while operational disruptions can occur due to crew scheduling, technical issues, or airport constraints, airlines are expected to maintain transparent communication with passengers.
Air India Express faces scrutiny
The public criticism from a national-level cricketer has placed Air India Express under spotlight again, with travellers urging the airline to improve its contingency planning and passenger communication system. This comes at a time when the aviation sector is witnessing rising concerns over recurring delays and cancellations across several carriers.
Air India Express has not yet revealed the specific operational reason behind the cancellation but has promised support to all affected customers. Refunds and rebooking options are reportedly being facilitated at the airport.
Conclusion
As passengers await further clarity, the incident highlights the need for improved communication standards within the airline industry. For now, Air India Express has assured stranded passengers that assistance will continue until all concerns are addressed.
