A tragic incident shook Mumbai’s Wadala area on Sunday after a 21-year-old man died by suicide, highlighting the deep and often unseen toll of substance abuse and unresolved mental health struggles within families.
Family tensions escalated overnight
The deceased, Haider Karachiwala, was a resident of Wadala and had reportedly been struggling with alcohol addiction for some time. Police said his dependency frequently led to arguments at home, particularly as alcohol consumption is prohibited in the family’s religious beliefs.
According to investigators, a heated argument broke out between Haider and his parents in the early hours of Sunday, after which he left the house in an agitated state. Later, police personnel from Vile Parle Police found him intoxicated and contacted his father, Yusuf Karachiwala, around 4 am.
Attempts at counselling failed
Haider was brought back home by his father around 6 am, with the family hoping to calm the situation. Police said his parents tried to counsel him, urging him to quit alcohol and seek a more disciplined path in life. However, Haider reportedly became overwhelmed during the discussion and withdrew to his room.
Around 8.15 am, his father discovered that Haider had jumped from the window of their 21st-floor apartment. Neighbours and family members rushed to help as panic spread through the building.
Rushed to hospital, declared dead
Police assisted in transporting Haider to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries from the fall.
The Wadala TT Police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Officials said no foul play is suspected at this stage, though further inquiry is underway to examine all circumstances leading to the incident.
A grim reminder
The incident has left the local community in shock and has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for accessible mental health support and addiction counselling, especially for young adults facing emotional and social pressures.
