During a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Parliamentary meeting on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Union Minister Amit Shah for becoming the longest-serving Home Minister in India’s history.
As of August 5, Shah has served 2,258 days as Union Minister of Home Affairs, surpassing the previous record held by BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani, who served 2,256 days from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004. The milestone coincides with the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which Shah had announced in Parliament on August 5, 2019.
Shah took office as Home Minister on May 30, 2019, in the second term of the Modi-led government. His tenure has included significant decisions such as revoking Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and various reforms in national security and internal affairs.
The NDA meeting, held at the Parliament Library Building, took place amid ongoing disruptions during the Monsoon Session, with Lok Sabha adjourned and continued protests in the Rajya Sabha.
Before Shah, the record was also held by Govind Ballabh Pant, a senior Congress leader, who served from January 10, 1955, to March 7, 1961, totaling 6 years and 56 days.
The recognition highlights Shah’s growing influence and long-standing role in shaping the country’s internal security policies under the current administration.
