Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) card, a major initiative aimed at modernising services for the Indian diaspora through a fully digital platform.
The launch, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), marks a significant step towards simplifying OCI-related services and enhancing convenience for overseas Indians. The initiative is expected to benefit more than 50 lakh OCI cardholders worldwide.
Shift from paper to digital
Until now, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards have been issued as paper booklets. With the introduction of the e-OCI card, the government aims to replace the physical document with a secure digital version, making it easier for cardholders to access and manage their OCI credentials.
The MHA said the move is part of the government’s broader digital governance initiative to improve service delivery and reduce paperwork.
Easier access for the Indian diaspora
The e-OCI system is expected to streamline various services, including document verification, updates and access to OCI-related information through an online platform.
Officials said the digital format will enhance efficiency, improve security and provide a more seamless experience for OCI cardholders living across the globe.
The initiative is also expected to reduce processing time for several OCI-related services while making documentation easier to store and retrieve electronically.
Boost to digital governance
The government described the launch as a citizen-centric reform that reflects India’s continued focus on leveraging technology to improve public services.
The Overseas Citizen of India scheme provides eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin with lifelong visa-free travel to India and several other benefits, though it does not confer Indian citizenship or political rights.
The introduction of the e-OCI card is expected to make interactions with Indian authorities more convenient while strengthening engagement with the global Indian diaspora.
