The Andhra Pradesh government has taken a major step to combat substance abuse by identifying 850 hotspots where narcotics and alcohol are being sold or consumed. These locations, spread across cities and towns including Vizag and Vijayawada, were pinpointed after detailed analysis by the specialised Eagle teams.
According to Eagle chief Ake Ravi Krishna, many of these hotspots are hidden in secluded areas, abandoned buildings, and small establishments. He noted that these places are often used by youngsters to sell and consume drugs. In response, the Eagle teams plan to intensify surprise raids, track repeat offenders, and detect emerging hotspots to curb illegal activities.
Krishna expressed concern over the rising use of cannabis among teenagers in the state. Despite ongoing anti-peddling measures, he said that many youngsters are still resorting to smoking weed and using hash oil. The teams are focusing on identifying users as well as distributors to reduce drug consumption among the youth.
The state government has reiterated the need for strict enforcement to address drug-related problems. Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the cultivation, sale, purchase, and consumption of cannabis are illegal and punishable offences. A senior official affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting young people from drug abuse, stressing that all necessary steps are being taken to achieve this goal.
