A major alleged financial irregularity at a Bank of Baroda branch in Para has triggered protests, with agitated account holders locking the premises and staging a sit-in outside.
The branch, located inside the Dr Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University campus, came under scrutiny after customers alleged serious discrepancies in their accounts, particularly involving fixed deposits.
Allegations of missing fixed deposits
The protest began around 11 am on Thursday when more than 25 customers gathered at the branch. Several claimed that their savings, especially fixed deposits, were either not visible in bank records or had completely disappeared.
Protesters alleged that the irregularities may have occurred with the involvement of bank correspondents or staff members. Raising slogans, they demanded the immediate return of their full deposits and strict action against those responsible.
Some customers said the missing funds had disrupted crucial life events, including wedding arrangements and educational expenses. The emotional distress was evident as many described the savings as their lifetime earnings.
Police intervene, probe underway
The agitation brought banking operations to a halt. Police personnel reached the spot and attempted to pacify the demonstrators, assuring them that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
Officials confirmed that statements from all concerned parties will be recorded as part of the inquiry. As of now, the bank management has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
Reports indicate that similar complaints had surfaced earlier at the same branch. Affected customers warned that if their grievances are not resolved promptly, they would escalate the matter to higher authorities.
