The mass killing of stray dogs in Telangana has sparked fresh outrage after around 100 canines were allegedly killed in Abbapuram village of Jagtial district, barely days after a similar incident was reported nearby.
Killings allegedly ordered by village leadership
According to police, the killings took place on Sunday and were allegedly carried out on the instructions of the village sarpanch. The Gollapally Police have registered an FIR against the sarpanch, upa sarpanch, panchayat secretary and others under Sections 325 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The complaint was filed by animal welfare activist Adulapuram Goutham, who said he received information that dogs were being killed by administering poisonous injections.
Carcasses found at dump yard
“I visited the village along with another activist and inspected the dump yard, where the carcasses of dogs were being buried in a pit,” Goutham said. “While we were there, a tractor arrived carrying more dog carcasses. Nearly 100 dogs appear to have been killed.”
The discovery has triggered anger among animal rights groups, who say the killings were carried out in violation of animal protection laws and established protocols for stray dog population management.
Second incident in 10 days
This is the second such case reported in Jagtial district within the last 10 days. Earlier, around 300 stray dogs were allegedly killed in Pegadapally village using similar methods, prompting widespread condemnation.
Animal welfare activists have demanded strict action against those responsible and called for accountability from local authorities. They have also urged the state government to strengthen enforcement of animal welfare laws and promote humane alternatives such as sterilisation and vaccination programmes.
Police said further investigation is underway and more arrests may follow based on evidence collected.
