TRICHY: In a bid to reduce fatal road accidents, Trichy city police have deployed 29 ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras across the city to automatically detect and fine traffic violations such as helmetless riding, triple-riding, not wearing seat belts, and one-way violations.

The cameras are linked to a centralized control room and use specialized software to read vehicle registration numbers and issue digital challans directly to the registered mobile number, regardless of who was behind the wheel.

Key deployment includes:

  • 21 cameras at 9 city checkposts targeting two-wheeler violations.

  • 6 cameras across 6 points checking for seatbelt violations in cars.

  • 2 high-end cameras at WB Road and Thennur Bridge for wrong-side driving detection.

  • However, the effectiveness of this high-tech system is hampered by vehicles with fancy, faded, or damaged number plates, which often escape detection. Residents, like Shyam Sundar from Kattur, say such plates can even mislead the system into penalising the wrong vehicle.

Police acknowledged this challenge and promised to launch drives to standardize number plates. They warned that even unintentional use of faulty plates would result in action. For wrongly fined vehicle owners, officials advised approaching the assistant commissioner with evidence for review.

While the digital system enhances accountability, the gap in enforcement on improper number plates could undermine its impact unless tackled swiftly.
