An Indian Army Cheetah helicopter crashed in the Tangtse region near Leh while returning from a strategic location in Ladakh, officials said.

Three officers onboard, including Major General Sachin Mehta, survived the crash in what has been described as a fortunate escape in the challenging high-altitude sector.

Helicopter crashes during return journey

According to reports, the helicopter was operating in the sensitive Ladakh region when the accident occurred near Tangtse.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been officially confirmed. However, officials said all occupants survived despite the difficult terrain and operational conditions in the area.

The Cheetah helicopter is widely used by the Indian Army for surveillance, transport and logistical operations in remote mountainous regions, especially in high-altitude sectors like Ladakh.

Rescue and investigation underway

Army personnel and rescue teams reportedly responded quickly following the crash. Further details regarding the condition of the officers have not yet been released officially.

Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances behind the accident.

Strategic importance of Ladakh sector

The Ladakh region remains one of India’s most strategically sensitive military zones due to its high-altitude terrain and border deployment requirements.

Military helicopters operating in such regions often face extreme weather conditions, low oxygen levels and difficult landing environments.

The incident has once again highlighted the operational challenges faced by armed forces personnel stationed in remote Himalayan sectors.
