New Delhi: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi stirred controversy today after taking his oath as a Lok Sabha member, delivering remarks that ignited strong reactions across political aisles. Owaisi, a five-time MP from Hyderabad, expressed solidarity with Palestine and hailed Telangana, delivering his oath in Urdu as per his preference.

However, his post-oath comments, including the slogan “Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine,” prompted immediate objections from BJP members in the treasury benches. Presiding officer Radha Mohan Singh and pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab intervened to clarify that only the formal oath or affirmation would be officially recorded.

Defending his stance outside Parliament, Owaisi argued, “Other MPs also make additional remarks. I spoke about Palestine because they are oppressed people. Show me the constitutional provision that prohibits it. Even Mahatma Gandhi has spoken in support of Palestine.”

The BJP has raised concerns about Owaisi’s remarks potentially demonstrating allegiance to a foreign state, citing grounds for disqualification. Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has formally objected to his speech and called for action, including a request for Owaisi to retake the oath.

This incident adds to the ongoing political activities over the selection of the Lok Sabha Speaker, with BJP’s efforts to reappoint Om Birla facing opposition from the INDIA bloc nominating K Suresh. Traditionally, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected by consensus, highlighting the current divisions within the House.
