A disturbing act of violence shocked Tirunelveli on Sunday evening, when Assistant Sub-Inspector M.M. Mohammed Rahmathullah (28) was brutally attacked with a sickle while walking with his family near the V.U.C. Playground, adjacent to a paddy field.
The officer noticed a clash breaking out among a group of locals and stepped in to intervene. As he attempted to detain one of those involved, another man allegedly drew a sickle and struck Rahmathullah on the hand, leaving him with serious injuries.
Rahmathullah was immediately rushed to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for deep lacerations. Police Commissioner Santosh Hadimani visited the officer in the hospital to ensure proper medical care and express his solidarity.
In response to the assault, police launched a swift manhunt. Investigators are actively questioning eyewitnesses and collecting clues from the site. Authorities are treating the case with urgency amid growing concern over the surge in attacks targeting police personnel.
