Social media in Assam has been engulfed in controversy after the alleged leak of a private video involving young influencer Dhunu Joni, also known as Dhunu Juni. The incident — marked by claims of a long MMS clip, allegations of AI-generated deepfakes, and unverified rumours about the identity of a man seen in the footage — has dominated online discussions since late November 2025.
Dhunu, an Assamese singer and social media personality from Nalbari district, had built a large following on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok through music, dance videos and cultural content. She disappeared from all social platforms on November 28–29, immediately after the purported clip began circulating, fuelling widespread speculation.
Allegations of deepfake manipulation
Cyber analysts examining the viral material have pointed out multiple signs of AI manipulation, including inconsistencies in lighting and facial-mapping irregularities, suggesting the footage may be a deepfake.
An unverified statement attributed to Dhunu claimed that “AI has ruined my life,” highlighting growing fears about influencer vulnerability and cyber exploitation.
Rumours trigger further unrest
The controversy intensified after conflicting, unverified claims emerged about the identity of the man in the video — initially said to be a married schoolteacher, later speculated to be Dhunu’s maternal uncle. None of these claims have been confirmed by officials, and the Assam Education Department has denied any ongoing inquiry involving school staff.
Images circulating online that allegedly depict the pair in wedding attire also remain unverified.
Social media fallout
The episode has triggered severe cyberbullying, with hashtags such as #DhunuMMS and #AssamViralGirl trending across platforms. While some users have circulated misinformation and trolling content, others — including women’s rights groups — have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified material and to respect the influencer’s privacy.
Cybersecurity experts warn that the ease of creating deepfakes has made November 2025 one of the most concerning periods for digital safety and online harassment in the country. Assam Police are reportedly trying to trace the origins of the viral clip, but no formal FIR has been registered so far. Dhunu’s family has not issued any public statement.
