Jhansi: Aban Ahmed, the youngest son of slain mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, was killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district on Thursday after the SUV in which he was travelling crashed into a road divider. One of his friends also died in the accident, while three others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment.
According to police, the accident occurred while Aban was travelling to Jhansi to meet his two brothers, who are currently lodged in separate prisons.
SUV crashes into divider
Senior Superintendent of Police BBGTS Murthy said police received information at around 10.30 am that an SUV had rammed into a road divider after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
The accident took place on the Kanpur–Jhansi Road in the Poonch area of Jhansi district.
Police said two occupants died in the crash, while three others suffered injuries and were shifted to the Government Medical College for treatment.
The deceased were identified as Aban Ahmed, a resident of Prayagraj, and Sonu, the son of Raja.
Preliminary inquiry points to high speed
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was travelling at a high speed before the accident.
SSP Murthy said one of the injured passengers informed investigators that the SUV became uncontrollable due to its speed before crashing into the divider.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Arvind Kumar confirmed that the accident occurred around 10.30 am and said the investigation into the incident is continuing.
Injured passenger recounts incident
One of the injured occupants, Mohammad Umar, who was travelling with Aban Ahmed, told reporters from his hospital bed that the group was on its way to Jhansi jail.
He said they were travelling to meet one of Aban’s brothers when the vehicle lost control because of its high speed and crashed into the divider.
Police said all legal procedures are being followed and senior officers have visited the accident site.
Background of Atiq Ahmed’s family
Aban Ahmed was the youngest of Atiq Ahmed’s five sons and the twin brother of Ahjam.
Two of his brothers, Umar and Ali, are currently lodged in separate jails in Uttar Pradesh.
Another brother, Asad Ahmed, who was wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, was killed in a police encounter near Jhansi in April 2023.
Atiq Ahmed’s wife, Shaista Parveen, remains absconding and is wanted in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case, according to police.
Atiq Ahmed’s killing
Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead on April 15, 2023, while being escorted by police for a medical examination in Prayagraj.
The two were attacked at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in an incident that was captured on live television and drew nationwide attention.
Authorities have not linked Thursday’s road accident to any criminal activity, and the case is being treated as a road traffic accident. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
