Chennai: Kayalvizhi Azhagiri, daughter of former Union Minister M.K. Azhagiri, was arrested by the Chennai city police on Tuesday in connection with an alleged assault on a senior official of the State Bank of India (SBI). She was later released on station bail after questioning.
The action follows a complaint filed by Namachivayam, Chief Manager of SBI, alleging that Kayalvizhi slapped the manager of the bank’s NRI Branch in Adyar.
Complaint filed by SBI official
According to the police, the complaint was lodged by Namachivayam, Chief Manager of the State Bank of India. Based on the complaint, the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station registered a case against Kayalvizhi on July 24, 2026, and initiated an investigation.
Following the inquiry, police arrested Kayalvizhi on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting the SBI official.
Released on station bail
After completing the interrogation, the police released Kayalvizhi on station bail, as the offences invoked were bailable in nature.
Officials have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances that led to the alleged incident at the bank.
Investigation continues
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and statements from those connected with the incident are being recorded. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The authorities have not yet released additional information regarding the motive behind the alleged assault.
