Chottu, the Labrador who became a household name through the popular YouTube channel Mr Chottu, passed away in the early hours of January 31 after battling a prolonged illness. He was eight-and-a-half years old.

The news was shared by his owners, Sundar and Aishwarya, in an emotional video titled “Chottu, Forever in Hearts”, uploaded on February 4. The 26-minute video details Chottu’s health struggles and the family’s final moments with their beloved pet.

From family pet to internet favourite

Chottu joined the family in 2017, when Sundar gifted the puppy to Aishwarya shortly after their marriage. Over the years, he became the heart of their family vlogs, appearing in most videos on the channel, which has close to 3.7 lakh subscribers.

Known for his playful energy and gentle nature, Chottu built a strong emotional bond with viewers, many of whom considered him part of their own families.

Health issues and final days

According to the couple, Chottu developed a fever in early January and was treated initially by their regular veterinarian. As his condition did not improve, he was taken to veterinary hospitals in Chennai, where doctors monitored him closely and adjusted treatment over several weeks.

Despite temporary improvements, his condition deteriorated rapidly towards the end of January. Sundar said doctors later informed them that complications had affected vital organs.

Aishwarya recalled speaking to Chottu softly in his final moments, urging him not to suffer. Chottu passed away at around 12.30 am on January 31.

Outpouring of grief from fans

The announcement video crossed 2.5 lakh views within 18 hours, with thousands of fans expressing grief, gratitude and condolences. The family buried Chottu on their land in Minjur and said they would share updates about the channel at a later date.
