A 40-year-old bicyclist was allegedly beaten to death by two men following a minor road rage incident in the Sushant Golf City area of Lucknow, police said on Wednesday. The two accused were arrested on Tuesday night.
The victim, identified as Santram, a daily wage worker and local farmers’ leader, was attacked late on Monday night after his bicycle reportedly brushed against a motorcycle owned by the accused.
Altercation escalated into fatal assault
According to police, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm when Santram’s bicycle grazed the motorcycle belonging to Deepak Kumar (21) and his relative Sushil (27). What began as a brief verbal argument allegedly escalated into violence.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vasanth Rallapali said the accused confessed during interrogation that they were heavily intoxicated at the time. “They chased the victim and assaulted him with a brick,” he said, adding that the body was later dumped on a vacant plot.
Santram’s body was found by the roadside the next morning, following which police launched a manhunt.
Accused arrested, evidence recovered
Based on CCTV footage from 15 to 20 cameras in the area, police traced the suspects and raided Deepak’s residence in Buddhukheda on Tuesday night, arresting both men.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Nipun Agarwal said the motorcycle used by the accused and the brick believed to be the murder weapon were recovered.
Police also revealed that the victim was known to the accused and allegedly owed them ₹70,000, a factor now being examined as part of the investigation.
Case registered
A case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother, Mastram. Further investigation is underway.
