A viral video showing a bird seemingly unfurling the Indian national flag during Independence Day celebrations in Kerala has captivated social media users. The footage, shared on August 17, quickly gained over one million views. It shows the flag being hoisted by a group of people, but as it reaches the top of the pole and remains stuck, a bird appears to fly towards it, causing the flag to unfurl and drop flower petals.
Shilpa, the social media user who posted the video, captioned it, “Kerala-National Flag got stuck at the top while hoisting. A bird came from nowhere and unfurled it!!” The video fueled widespread excitement, with many interpreting the bird’s actions as a sign of divine intervention.
However, a follow-up video posted in the comments provides clarity on the event. Filmed from a different angle, this second clip shows that the bird never actually approached the flagpole. Instead, it was perched on a coconut leaf behind the pole and flew away without influencing the flag’s movement. The X fact-checker team confirmed this, noting, “Missing context: The crow sits on the coconut leaf, behind the flag post. Did not influence the flag opening at all. Watching at 0.25x speed reveals clearly.”
The follow-up has tempered the initial excitement, reminding viewers to verify facts before jumping to conclusions.
