A 33-year-old Mumbai college professor, Alok Kumar Singh, who was allegedly stabbed to death following a minor argument on a local train, had planned to take his wife out for dinner to celebrate her birthday on Saturday evening, police said.

Argument during alighting turns fatal

According to the Government Railway Police, the incident occurred around 5.40 pm at Malad railway station on the Western line. Singh, who worked as a professor at Narsee Monjee College, was travelling towards Kandivali after leaving work when an argument broke out while passengers were alighting from the train.

Police said the altercation between Singh and the accused escalated suddenly, leading to a brutal stabbing on platform number one. Singh collapsed in a pool of blood and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Accused arrested within 12 hours

The Borivali unit of the GRP arrested the accused, identified as Omkar Shinde (27), a metal polishing labourer, within 12 hours of the crime. He was apprehended from the Kurar area of Mumbai’s western suburbs and has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A court remanded him to five days of police custody.

Investigators said the accused fled the scene by taking advantage of the rush-hour crowd but was identified through CCTV footage installed at the station. The murder weapon is yet to be recovered.

Family tragedy and background

Police revealed that Singh had informed colleagues before leaving college that he was heading out for dinner. His father, Anil Kumar Singh, is part of the security detail of Rajnath Singh and was in Delhi for Republic Day parade preparations when he received news of his son’s death.

The killing has sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over commuter safety and rising aggression in Mumbai’s crowded local trains.
