BJP Forms Committee to Investigate Political Violence in West Bengal

Jp Nadda

New Delhi: BJP President J P Nadda has appointed a four-member committee to investigate the purported incidents of political violence in West Bengal. The move comes amidst accusations from the BJP that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has failed to address the escalating situation effectively.

The committee comprises BJP MPs Biplab Kumar Deb, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Brij Lal, and Kavita Patidar, with Biplab Kumar Deb appointed as the convener. According to a statement released by the party, Mamata Banerjee has been criticized for her alleged inaction while members of her party are accused of attacking and intimidating opposition workers and voters without repercussion.

The statement further highlighted the intervention of the Calcutta High Court, which extended the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) until June 21. The court has also scheduled a hearing on June 18 to address these concerns.

“The Lok Sabha elections were conducted peacefully nationwide, with no reports of political violence except in West Bengal,” the BJP asserted. They continued to allege that the state is embroiled in a cycle of post-poll violence reminiscent of the aftermath of the 2021 assembly elections.

The committee’s formation underscores BJP’s proactive approach in addressing the alleged incidents of violence and ensuring accountability amidst political tensions in West Bengal.
