Lucknow: In a surprising turn of events, the Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Lallu Singh in the Faizabad constituency of Uttar Pradesh where Ayodhya’s Ram Temple is located.

This defeat comes despite the BJP heavily promoting the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, a significant campaign promise they claimed to have fulfilled. The party also criticized the Congress for not attending the idol consecration ceremony held in December.

Lallu Singh, who had held the Faizabad seat for the last two consecutive terms, lost to Prasad by a margin of 54,567 votes. Awadhesh Prasad secured 5,54,289 votes, while Lallu Singh received 4,99,722 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party’s Sachidanand Pandey finished third, garnering 46,407 votes.

The BJP’s loss in Faizabad, especially following the inauguration of the Ayodhya temple, marks a significant political upset, highlighting a shift in voter sentiment in the region.
