Chennai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday released its manifesto for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, outlining a mix of welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and cultural initiatives.
The manifesto was unveiled by Union Minister JP Nadda in the presence of state leaders Nainar Nagendran and K. Annamalai.
₹2,000 monthly aid and welfare promises
A key highlight of the manifesto is the promise of a ₹2,000 monthly stipend for women heads of households, along with a one-time assistance of ₹10,000 for every household.
The BJP also pledged financial support for women-led self-help groups (SHGs), cooperatives, and MSMEs. This includes interest-free loans of up to ₹50 lakh for manufacturing units and a 20 per cent government procurement quota for such enterprises.
The party’s ally, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), had earlier made similar welfare promises in its own manifesto, signalling a shared focus within the NDA alliance.
Major rail and transport projects proposed
The BJP has proposed a comprehensive overhaul of Tamil Nadu’s rail infrastructure. Key projects include:
- High-speed rail corridors connecting Chennai with Bengaluru and Hyderabad
- Coimbatore–Tiruppur–Salem Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)
- Villupuram–Chennai semi-urban rail network
- Introduction of sleeper versions of Vande Bharat trains linking Chennai with Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata
- A proposed hydro power train project
The party said land acquisition for these projects would be carried out at fair prices to ensure smoother implementation.
Focus on women’s safety and governance
The manifesto also emphasises improved law and order, particularly for women’s safety. The BJP has promised:
- Special fast-track courts for crimes against women
- Victim and witness protection mechanisms
- Better utilisation of the Nirbhaya Fund
These measures aim to strengthen legal support systems and ensure faster justice delivery.
Cultural and religious initiatives
The BJP has also proposed cultural initiatives, including declaring Thaipoosam as the state festival to honour Lord Murugan.
Additionally, the party promised to restore and protect the tradition of lighting the Karthigai Deepam at the Thiruparankundram hilltop, an issue that has been part of ongoing social and legal debates.
Political context and criticism of DMK
During the manifesto launch, JP Nadda criticised the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), accusing it of corruption, dynastic politics, and poor governance.
He claimed that public sentiment in the state reflects dissatisfaction with the current administration and expressed confidence that voters would respond strongly in the upcoming elections.
The BJP is contesting 27 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly as part of the NDA alliance.
Conclusion
The BJP’s Tamil Nadu manifesto combines welfare promises, infrastructure expansion, and cultural initiatives in an attempt to broaden its appeal in the state. With a focus on women’s financial support and large-scale rail projects, the party aims to position itself as a development-driven alternative.
As the election approaches, the effectiveness of these promises in influencing voter sentiment remains to be seen.
