A Blinkit delivery partner whose candid video on low earnings in the gig economy sparked nationwide debate recently met Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, after the issue was raised in Parliament.

Viral video that triggered a wider conversation

The delivery partner, Thapliyal Ji, originally from Uttarakhand, had shared a video detailing a demanding workday in which he completed 28 deliveries over more than 14 hours, earning ₹762. The video went viral across social media platforms, prompting concern over whether such returns were sustainable or fair for gig workers operating under app-based delivery systems such as Blinkit.

Viewers reacted strongly, with many questioning the structure of the gig economy, while others urged customers to tip riders more generously. Several users also criticised algorithm-driven work models that determine pay, incentives and delivery targets with little transparency.

A meeting beyond politics

Following the public response, Thapliyal Ji was invited to Chadha’s residence for lunch. He later shared clips from the meeting on Instagram, describing the MP as approachable and empathetic.

“We had an open conversation about the work delivery riders do, their hard work, and the issues they face,” he wrote. He added that Chadha “never made me feel like he’s an MP” and listened closely to the ground realities faced by riders.

During their discussion, Thapliyal Ji highlighted unpredictable shifts, fluctuating incomes, algorithm-based targets and the absence of effective grievance redressal mechanisms. According to him, these pressures form part of everyday life for thousands of delivery workers across Indian cities.

Issue raised in Parliament

Days after the viral video, Chadha flagged the challenges faced by gig workers in the Rajya Sabha, pointing to low pay, long working hours and the lack of social security or wage protection. Sharing a clip of his intervention on X, he described the situation as “systemic exploitation hidden behind apps and algorithms”.

He stressed that as India’s digital economy expands, it is vital to ensure fair wages, reasonable working hours and basic protections for those powering delivery platforms.

Growing focus on gig worker rights

The episode has renewed attention on the gig economy in India, particularly the need for policy frameworks that balance technological growth with worker welfare. Experts say clearer regulations and safeguards are essential to prevent exploitation while sustaining platform-based employment.

For Thapliyal Ji, the meeting symbolised more than personal recognition. “For a delivery rider, this was not just a meeting, but a huge responsibility,” he said, thanking Chadha for hearing the collective voice of riders
