A fresh bomb threat targeting the Coimbatore Collectorate sent shockwaves through the city on Tuesday, prompting an intense security operation by police and bomb disposal units. The threat came in the form of an anonymous letter warning of an impending explosion within the government complex.
The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), assisted by sniffer dogs, launched a full-scale search across both the new and old Collectorate buildings, which house key government departments including the offices of the District Collector, Civil Supplies, Revenue, Social Welfare, and Tamil Development.
Given the high daily footfall in the premises — with hundreds of citizens visiting for official work — security was immediately tightened. Access points were sealed, and large police contingents were deployed to monitor and control movement in and around the area.
“We’re treating this with utmost seriousness,” said a senior police officer. “Though nothing suspicious has been found yet, we are not letting our guard down.”
Authorities are currently investigating the origin of the threat, with preliminary suspicion pointing to a possible hoax. However, given the sensitive nature of the location, officials are exercising extreme caution.
This isn’t the first such scare — the Collectorate has received similar threats in the past, resulting in lockdowns and emergency protocols. Public access remains restricted until further notice, and all staff and visitors have been advised to stay vigilant.
