Darjeeling, West Bengal: A 48-year-old man, Dipanjan Mitra, was arrested on October 17 for allegedly sending bomb threat emails claiming to have planted hydrogen-based Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at three prominent colleges in Bengaluru.
The investigation began after the principal of the Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT) reported a threatening email from the address “[email protected],” asserting that IEDs were placed on campus. A similar complaint was filed by BMS College of Engineering on the same day. Following these complaints, a special team was formed, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lokesh Baramappa Jagalasar.
Mitra confessed to sending the emails during interrogation and admitted involvement in at least 10 similar incidents, prompting further investigations into bomb threats at other educational institutions across Bengaluru. Authorities seized an HP laptop and a Nokia mobile phone used in the crime.
On October 4, after receiving bomb threats, the Bangalore Institute of Technology, BMS College, and MS Ramaiah College were placed on high alert. Police and bomb disposal teams were deployed, leading to the evacuation of students and staff for safety.
