The discovery of a bone in a packet of vegetarian biryani purchased from a roadside stall in Ghaziabad has triggered public outrage and led to police action against the vendor, raising fresh concerns over food safety and labelling practices.
The incident occurred near Neelam Factory in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, where the complainant, Anil Sharma, bought a vegetarian biryani from a cart operating under the name “RK Biryani”. According to the complaint, the food was taken home, but while family members were eating, they found a bone in the dish.
Family alleges misleading branding
Sharma said he immediately returned to the stall with the food packet, where the vendor allegedly admitted to the mistake. The family has claimed that the stall’s branding and digital payment details were misleading and contributed to their belief that the biryani was vegetarian.
While the cart displayed the name “RK Biryani”, the QR code used for online payment reportedly showed the name “Rahul”. During the confrontation, the vendor was identified as Rashid. The family said the discrepancy in names and branding created confusion about the nature of the food being sold.
“We bought it assuming it was vegetarian. When a bone came out while eating, we were shocked. The name and identification made it seem like a vegetarian outlet,” Sharma said.
Video goes viral, locals demand action
A video of the confrontation between the family and the vendor quickly went viral on social media, amplifying public anger and drawing attention to the issue. Local residents said the incident has added to existing concerns over food quality and transparency at roadside stalls.
Residents pointed out that Ghaziabad has seen similar food-related controversies in the past, including allegations of unhygienic practices and adulteration, which had sparked protests and demands for stricter checks.
Police register FIR, probe underway
The Uttar Pradesh Police confirmed that a written complaint was received and an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of law. The vendor has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
“The matter is being examined thoroughly. Appropriate action will be taken as per law if the allegations are found to be true,” a police official said.
Call for tighter regulation of street food
The incident has renewed calls from residents for stricter regulation, regular inspections and clearer labelling norms for roadside food vendors. Many locals stressed that consumers should be clearly informed whether food is vegetarian or non-vegetarian to avoid such incidents and maintain trust.
Authorities have urged the public to report similar cases promptly, stating that food safety and consumer confidence remain a priority.
