A routine farm visit ended in tragedy when a 54-year-old man fell into a well along with his tractor after it reportedly suffered brake failure near Narasothipatti on Sunday.
The deceased, identified as Venkatesan from Ashok Nagar in Narasothipatti, owned a grill workshop in Kuranguchavadi and was also engaged in farming activities.
Tractor plunges into 100-foot well
According to police, Venkatesan had travelled to his farmland carrying hollow bricks in his tractor to construct a small platform inside the well for installing a motor pump. As he approached the well, the vehicle’s brakes allegedly failed.
The tractor went out of control and toppled headlong into the well, which is about 100 feet deep and contained more than 20 feet of water.
Workers present on the farmland witnessed the accident and immediately alerted the authorities.
Seven-hour rescue effort
Personnel from the fire and rescue services rushed to the scene along with officers from the Suramangalam police station. A crane was deployed to retrieve the tractor from the well, while an ambulance and medical team remained on standby.
After nearly seven hours of strenuous rescue operations, Venkatesan’s body was recovered from the well. He was declared dead at the scene.
The body was later sent to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case and further investigation is under way to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
The incident has left the local community shaken, highlighting the risks associated with farm machinery and the importance of vehicle maintenance, especially in hazardous terrains.
