Mumbai: A British national working with the Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcast team was found dead in his hotel room in Mumbai on Monday morning, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased has been identified as Ian William Langford (76), who was staying at the Trident Hotel while working on IPL coverage.
Found unresponsive in hotel room
According to officials, Langford had checked into the hotel on March 24 and was actively involved in broadcast operations for IPL matches across the city.
On March 29, he reportedly returned to his room after completing work at a match. The next morning, hotel staff attempted to contact him but received no response.
A search team used a master key to enter the room, where Langford was found lying on the floor. The hotel’s in-house doctor was immediately called and declared him dead at the scene.
Police register unnatural death case
The Mumbai Police, specifically the Marine Drive police station, registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation.
Authorities stated that preliminary observations have not indicated any signs of foul play so far. However, all aspects of the case are being examined to determine the exact cause of death.
Body sent for post-mortem
Langford’s body was shifted to Bombay Hospital for further examination, where a post-mortem will help ascertain the cause of death.
Police officials said that medical reports will play a crucial role in clarifying whether the death was due to natural causes or any other factors.
Associated with IPL broadcast team
Langford was part of the broadcast crew working with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the IPL. He had been covering matches at various venues in Mumbai as part of the technical team.
His sudden death has come as a shock to colleagues and members of the IPL production unit.
Investigation continues
While initial findings suggest no suspicious elements, police are continuing their investigation to rule out any possibility of foul play. Statements from hotel staff and colleagues are being recorded as part of the probe.
Conclusion
The unexpected death of a senior broadcast professional during the IPL season has raised concerns, even as authorities indicate no immediate signs of wrongdoing. The final cause of death will be confirmed following medical examination and completion of the investigation.
