A second-year BTech student died after allegedly jumping from the fourth floor of a hostel building in Knowledge Park-3 on Friday night, police said. The incident has triggered unrest among students, with allegations of harassment and assault now forming part of the investigation.
The deceased was identified as Udit Soni, a resident of Bhognipur in Jhansi district. He was pursuing his BTech degree at a college in the Knowledge Park area of Greater Noida.
Events leading to the incident
According to police, Udit returned to the hostel late at night along with two friends after allegedly consuming alcohol. Hostel management noticed their condition and reprimanded Udit for violating hostel rules. During the confrontation, the management reportedly recorded a video of the incident and sent it to his father, Vijay Soni.
Police said Udit’s father scolded him over the phone after seeing the video and warned that his name could be struck off the college rolls and that he would be called back home. Following the conversation, Udit appeared deeply distressed.
Declared dead at hospital
Shortly after, Udit allegedly jumped from the fourth floor of the hostel building. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and completed legal formalities. The body was sent for post-mortem examination in the presence of family members, who arrived soon after the incident.
Allegations and student unrest
Following Udit’s death, some students vandalised hostel property and buses. A section of students alleged that Udit was beaten by the hostel warden and owner and was thrown off the roof, a claim police said is being verified.
Two people have been taken into custody for questioning. Senior police officers visited the hostel, interacted with students to maintain calm, and assured a fair probe.
Probe under way
Police said statements of several students, hostel staff and management are being recorded to establish the exact sequence of events. An FIR is being registered based on a complaint filed by the family. Authorities said the situation is currently under control and further investigation is ongoing.
