A 36-year-old businessman from East Delhi died after being brutally assaulted during a late-night altercation near Connaught Place, once again raising serious concerns over public safety in the national capital’s most crowded commercial zone after dark.
The victim, Shivam Gupta, had gone to attend a party with a friend on the night of January 2. According to police, an argument broke out between Shivam and a group of delivery partners near Rajiv Chowk metro station, which quickly escalated into violence. Around three individuals allegedly assaulted him during the confrontation.
Found unconscious, rushed to hospital
Police said they received a PCR call around 1.30 am on January 3 reporting an unconscious man lying on the road in a pool of blood. Shivam was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors found multiple head injuries and a haematoma. Due to his critical condition, he was unable to give a statement.
Meanwhile, his family grew anxious when he did not return home and could not be contacted. Hours later, they were informed by the police that he had been hospitalised.
Succumbed after days of treatment
On January 4, Shivam was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he underwent surgery the following day. Doctors described the next 36 to 72 hours as crucial. Though his condition showed brief improvement, he succumbed to his injuries on January 19 after battling for life for over two weeks.
Arrests made, probe continues
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Two suspects have been arrested so far, while efforts are on to trace others involved. CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the scene are being examined. The family has alleged that a helmet was used as a weapon during the assault.
The incident has renewed public outrage over late-night safety in Connaught Place, with citizens demanding stronger policing, quicker response, and enhanced surveillance to prevent such fatal attacks.
