A video showing an argument between a cab driver and a woman passenger over wearing a seatbelt has gone viral on social media, triggering a wider debate on respect, class behaviour and how service workers are treated in everyday interactions.

What the video shows

The clip begins with two women entering a cab, with one sitting in the front passenger seat. After requesting the ride OTP, the driver politely asks the front-seat passenger to fasten her seatbelt, explaining that traffic police could issue a challan if she does not comply.

Despite initially agreeing, the woman refuses to wear the seatbelt immediately and asks the driver to start the ride. When the driver calmly insists that he cannot move until the belt is worn, the exchange escalates into an argument.

Argument turns personal

The woman is seen accusing the driver of “showing off” and mocking him for speaking in English. She also comments on his facial expressions and questions his behaviour, while using abusive language during the exchange. Throughout the clip, the driver maintains a calm tone and reiterates that he is only following rules. He eventually tells the passengers they are free to cancel the ride if they are unhappy.

Soon after, the women exit the cab. News18 has not independently verified the authenticity of the video, though it has been widely shared online.

Many viewers supported the driver, calling the incident an example of entitlement and lack of respect towards service workers. Several users noted how confidently speaking in English is often wrongly perceived as arrogance in Indian society.

Others pointed out the importance of dash cameras in protecting drivers from false allegations. However, some viewers questioned why the driver himself was not seen wearing a seatbelt, while a few suggested the clip might be staged.
