West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose’s defamation suit against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set for a hearing at the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday. The suit was filed by Mr. Bose on June 28, a day after the Chief Minister alleged that women had expressed fear about visiting Raj Bhavan due to its activities.
The defamation case, scheduled before Justice Krishna Rao’s bench, is a response to Ms. Banerjee’s statement. Governor Bose emphasized the responsibility of public officials to avoid spreading misleading and damaging impressions.
The controversy arose after Ms. Banerjee’s remarks during a state secretariat meeting on June 27, where she cited concerns from women regarding recent incidents at Raj Bhavan. Earlier, on May 2, a contractual female employee at Raj Bhavan had accused Bose of misconduct, prompting an investigation by the Kolkata Police.
Article 361 of the Constitution protects governors from criminal proceedings during their tenure in office.
