A tragic incident was reported from Ahmedabad on Sunday night after a middle-aged man suffering from cancer died following an act of self-immolation in a public area, police said
The incident occurred between 9 pm and 10 pm on February 2 in the Asarwa locality. According to police, the man allegedly poured a flammable liquid on himself and set himself on fire in full public view.
People present at the spot immediately rushed to help and attempted to douse the flames by pouring water on him. Despite their efforts, the man sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to Civil Hospital for emergency treatment.
Succumbed during treatment
Doctors said the man was admitted in a critical condition but succumbed to his injuries late at night while undergoing treatment. Following the incident, Shahibaug Police Station registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation.
Shahibaug police inspector N D Nakum said preliminary inquiries revealed that the man was undergoing cancer treatment and was allegedly distressed by his prolonged illness. “It has initially come to light that the man took this extreme step as he was fed up with his health condition. Further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
Incident witnessed by locals
According to eyewitness accounts, the man arrived at Asarwa Chakla, sprayed a flammable substance on his body and lit a beedi, setting himself ablaze within moments. Alarmed residents acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and alert emergency services.
Local sources said the man had previously lived in the Asarwa area and his family members also reside nearby. Police are in the process of informing relatives and recording statements.
Call for awareness and support
The incident has once again highlighted the emotional and psychological toll of chronic illness and the importance of accessible mental health and palliative care support for patients battling long-term diseases.
