In the heart of Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, chaos unfolded this afternoon at the Cyber Chowk intersection, devoid of any traffic signals. A Hyundai Santro, driven by a 72-year-old man, careened recklessly, colliding with four motorcycles before ultimately crashing into a parked vehicle.
Tragically, the consequences were grave. The driver of the Santro and two additional individuals lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries in the harrowing incident, which was captured by surveillance cameras.
At precisely 2:25 pm, the Cyber Chowk bustled with its usual activity as vehicles of all kinds traversed the intersection, relying solely on caution to navigate. Three motorcycles proceeded straight ahead, while a fourth crossed from right to left. However, at 2:26 pm, the speeding Santro abruptly disrupted this routine, plowing into the two-wheelers, hurling riders and passengers several feet away, as depicted in the recorded footage.
In a stroke of luck, a man and a woman narrowly avoided the collision by mere inches as the vehicle surged past them, striking the motorists ahead before ultimately colliding with a stationary vehicle at the far end of the road.
The aftermath was chilling, with visuals capturing the anguish of those involved. A man was seen lifting a child from one of the bikes, while the woman who rode pillion required assistance to rise. Several individuals were flung considerable distances, with one man lying motionless on the pavement.
Meanwhile, the Santro careened into a nearby pole before slamming into the parked vehicle, flipping onto its side in a matter of seconds. Witnesses rushed to aid the victims amidst the chaos.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident. Alongside the driver, two others perished in the crash, while the identities of the victims remain undisclosed pending further inquiry.
