The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented allegations of a ‘criminal nexus’ involving Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and several co-accused. These charges are part of an ongoing investigation into suspected corruption at the institution.
The charges emerged following the August 9 rape-murder of a trainee doctor, allegedly by Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police. Ghosh was removed from his position in the wake of this incident, and the case is also under CBI investigation.
On September 3, the CBI detailed its charges before the special court in Alipur, presenting the accused—Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali—who are currently in custody. The investigation has revealed connections between Ghosh and the vendors Singha and Hazra, whom he allegedly knew from his tenure at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. These vendors are said to have benefited from hospital contracts after Ghosh moved to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital and subsequently RG Kar.
The CBI’s court submission outlined how Ghosh is accused of favouring his security aide, Afsar Ali, who is the fourth arrested individual. It was revealed that the contract for a cafe on RG Kar’s premises was awarded to M/s Eshan Cafe, a firm owned by Nargis Khanum, the wife of Afsar Ali. Despite being the only eligible firm, the CBI claims the contract was awarded in a predetermined manner.
Additionally, the agency is probing Ali’s alleged involvement in the improper handling of biomedical waste, further complicating the corruption case against the individuals involved.
