A tragic incident was reported from the Gheekanta area of Ahmedabad on Thursday after a century-old building collapsed in the Navtad Pol locality, claiming the life of an elderly woman and leaving others injured.
The collapse occurred while drainage work was underway near the dilapidated structure. Three people were trapped under the debris when the building gave way, triggering panic in the densely populated residential area.
Rescue teams rush to site
Soon after the incident was reported, teams from the fire brigade, police and the municipal corporation rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. After sustained efforts, the trapped persons were pulled out from the rubble.
However, Pushpaben Panchal (62), who was among those trapped, succumbed to her injuries during treatment at Civil Hospital, officials confirmed. Two others, including a labourer, were rescued and shifted for medical care.
Drainage work suspected as trigger
Local MLA Kaushik Jain said that the buildings in Navtad Pol are nearly 100 years old and structurally weak. He stated that drainage line work was in progress near the building at the time of the collapse and vibrations from the work may have contributed to the incident.
He added that he has requested the municipal commissioner to permit owners of dilapidated buildings in the Kot area to carry out repairs or reconstruction to prevent such tragedies.
Concerns over old structures
The incident has renewed concerns over ageing residential structures in Ahmedabad’s old city areas and the risks posed during civic infrastructure work. Officials said a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine responsibility and assess whether safety norms were followed.
Residents have demanded urgent structural audits and preventive action to avoid further loss of life.
