Chennai: The Chennai airport, where operations were suspended till Sunday in the wake of floods, will partially resume flight operations from Saturday morning.
airportchennaiThe Chennai airport will resume its flight services only partially to ferry stranded aircraft. The flights can only take off without passengers and no landings will take place. The clearance was given by DGCA following an inspection of the facilities at the airport.

“It is mainly to provide relief to the planes which have been stranded for the past few days,” said airport director Deepak Shastri. He said operations will take place only during the day, “All the airlines have been notified of this measure.”

Landing facilities have not been restarted because the navigational aids that are required need to checked. Besides, facilities at the terminals are yet to be restored.

Several airlines have showed interest in flying out their aircraft. The runway which was under water is now fit for operations and whatever repairs were required have been carried out.

“After the water started to recede, we immediately we took up the task to clear the sedimentation left behind with moppers,” Mr Shastri said.

Visibility and other conditions for flying will depend on the call of pilots and the Air Traffic Control. Roads leading to the airport from Mount road and Saidapet are also clear now.
