Chennai: In a heart-warming incident that has drawn widespread praise, a woman civic worker employed with the Greater Chennai Corporation returned a bag containing gold jewellery worth over ₹45 lakh after finding it on a roadside in the busy T. Nagar area.

The woman, identified as Padma, was on her routine sanitation duty on Sunday morning at Muppathamman Koil Road in T. Nagar when she noticed a plastic cover lying unattended on the roadside while sweeping the area. Initially assuming it to be waste, she picked it up as part of her work. However, upon opening the cover, she was stunned to find a large quantity of gold jewellery inside.

Honest action amid temptation

Despite the immense value of the ornaments and the temptation such a discovery could bring, Padma chose the path of honesty. Without delaying or sharing the matter with others, she immediately went to the nearby Pondy Bazaar police station and handed over the bag to the police.

Police officials who examined the contents found that the bag contained 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments, weighing approximately 360 grams. Based on prevailing market rates, the jewellery was valued at more than ₹45 lakh.

Senior police officers praised Padma for her integrity and said her swift decision ensured the valuables were safely returned to their rightful owner.

Owner traces lost gold

Meanwhile, a man identified as Ramesh, a resident of Nanganallur and a former gold trader, had approached the police to report the loss of his gold jewellery. According to police, Ramesh had come to T. Nagar on Saturday evening to meet a friend and had carried the bag of gold with him.

During his visit, he allegedly left the bag near a roadside pushcart and inadvertently forgot to retrieve it before leaving the area. Realising the loss later, he lodged a complaint with the police.

After Padma handed over the jewellery, police matched the details provided by Ramesh with the contents of the recovered bag. Upon verification of ownership documents and other details, police confirmed that the jewellery belonged to him.

Jewellery returned after verification

Following due procedure, the police formally handed over the gold jewellery to Ramesh. He reportedly expressed immense relief and gratitude, both to the police and to Padma, whose honesty ensured the safe return of the valuables.

Police officials said such incidents reinforce public trust in civic workers and highlight the importance of ethical conduct in everyday public service roles.

Praise pours in

Padma’s act of integrity has been widely lauded by officials, local residents and social media users alike. Many described her as a shining example of honesty, civic responsibility and moral courage, especially at a time when incidents of lost valuables often end differently.

Officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation also acknowledged her conduct, noting that civic workers play a crucial role not only in maintaining the city’s cleanliness but also in upholding its social values.

Conclusion

The incident serves as a powerful reminder that honesty and integrity transcend economic status or profession. Padma’s decision to return gold jewellery worth over ₹45 lakh has not only reunited a man with his lost valuables but also restored faith in everyday heroes whose actions quietly make society better.
