In a transformative step for Chennai’s urban mobility, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has finalized a deal worth ₹1,540 crore with Alstom Transport India. The agreement, formalized on April 28, 2025, involves the provision of automated, driverless train systems as part of the city’s ambitious Phase 2 metro extension.

This collaboration signals a significant advancement in public transport, as these next-generation trains will run without human operators, relying entirely on cutting-edge automation. These trainsets are expected to improve travel frequency, ensure greater reliability, and enhance passenger safety through smart systems and precision control.

Alstom will supply state-of-the-art, fully autonomous trains built with modern urban design, focused on both functionality and aesthetics. The technology is likely to include Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), enabling seamless operations with minimal manual intervention. The upgrade marks Chennai’s bold move into the league of global cities that operate unattended train systems.

The Phase 2 expansion spans nearly 119 km, connecting key corridors such as Madhavaram–SIPCOT, Lighthouse–Poonamallee, and Madhavaram–Sholinganallur, thereby extending metro access to several growing residential and commercial hubs.

This contract not only supports the metro’s infrastructural growth but also aligns with India’s broader mission to embrace green, efficient, and tech-driven urban transport solutions.

With this major milestone, Chennai positions itself as a pioneer in smart mobility, delivering faster, safer, and more sustainable travel to lakhs of commuters daily.
