A new study by Briefcase Index has identified Chhatisgarh as the Indian region hit hardest by rising petrol prices amid the Iran conflict, with the listed state-wise petrol price increasing by ₹1.29 per litre between February 22 and April 1.

The B2B discovery platform analysed state-wise petrol price data published by Goodreturns and created a ranking of Indian states and union territories based on the size of their price increases over the period.

Jammu & Kashmir ranked second with a petrol price increase of ₹0.66 per litre, while Uttarakhand placed third at ₹0.62.

The study found that Chhatisgarh’s petrol price increase was about 12.9 times larger than Sikkim’s, the smallest rise in the ranking at ₹0.10 per litre.

“What stands out is how unevenly petrol-price pressure was distributed across India,” said a Briefcase Index spokesperson. “Chhatisgarh saw the biggest increase, while most regions moved only modestly, which suggests the Iran-related oil shock was cushioned at the national level but still passed through more noticeably in selected parts of the country.”

The findings are consistent with broader signs that the Iran conflict put upward pressure on India’s fuel market even as policy action limited the overall pass-through to consumers. The Government of India said in late March that it had reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre to shield consumers and oil marketing companies from the global oil shock, while Mint reported on March 20 that retail petrol prices in India had remained relatively stable despite crude prices surging past $100 a barrel.
