Chitradurga: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives in the horrific road accident in Chitradurga district, in which a passenger bus caught fire after being hit by a speeding truck, killing at least nine people.

The Chief Minister said a detailed investigation would be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and ensure accountability. Expressing condolences, he also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.

Accident leaves nine dead in early morning crash

The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when a private bus was hit by a truck at high speed in Chitradurga district. Following the collision, the bus reportedly burst into flames, trapping several passengers inside and leading to multiple fatalities on the spot.

Eyewitnesses and preliminary reports suggest that the impact of the crash was severe, giving passengers little time to escape before the fire spread rapidly through the vehicle. Fire and emergency services rushed to the scene and worked to douse the flames and rescue survivors, but the intensity of the blaze hampered rescue operations.

At least nine people were confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The condition of some of the injured is said to be serious.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took to social media platform X to express his grief and announce relief measures for the victims’ families.

“An investigation will be conducted into this matter, the cause of the accident will be found and necessary action will be taken. I once again pray that those injured in the incident recover as soon as possible and may the soul of the deceased rest in peace,” he wrote.

Along with the ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh to the kin of each deceased, the state government is also expected to extend medical assistance to the injured and ensure that their treatment expenses are covered.

Officials said the district administration has been directed to coordinate closely with hospitals and provide all necessary support to victims and their families.

Prime Minister announces PMNRF assistance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the Chitradurga accident and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May those injured recover at the earliest,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a post on X that an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased from the PMNRF, while the injured would receive ₹50,000 each.

With the combined assistance from the Centre and the state, the families of each deceased will receive a total of ₹7 lakh as immediate financial relief.

Deputy CM and leaders express condolences

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also expressed grief over the tragic incident. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Several other political leaders and public representatives have also expressed shock at the accident, calling it a grim reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and inadequate road safety enforcement.

Investigation into cause of accident

The Karnataka government has assured that a thorough investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary inquiries are expected to focus on whether overspeeding, negligence, or mechanical failure led to the collision.

Police officials said that statements from the truck driver, bus staff, and survivors will be recorded as part of the investigation. The condition of both vehicles and compliance with safety norms will also be examined.

Authorities are also likely to review emergency response timelines and fire safety measures in passenger buses, especially on long-distance routes.

Conclusion

The Chitradurga bus fire tragedy has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of road accidents in Karnataka. While the announcements of ex-gratia by both the state and central governments offer some relief to the affected families, officials stress that preventing such incidents through stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road safety remains crucial.

As the investigation progresses, families of the victims and the wider public await answers and accountability for a tragedy that has claimed innocent lives.
