A Navi Mumbai resident, Dinesh Patil, who works as a media person, is currently recovering from a fractured leg after falling on a slippery footpath in Belapur’s Sector 4. Patil, who has already spent around Rs 4 lakh on medical treatment, including a steel rod insertion, has written to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) requesting compensation for the injury caused by the poor state of the footpath.
The incident occurred about two months ago when Patil was heading to an important event at Warkari Bhavan. While navigating the footpath, he slipped due to moss accumulation on the surface. During the same incident, a former woman corporator who tried to assist him also fell but was fortunately not seriously injured.
Despite Patil’s appeal, the NMMC has not responded positively. When contacted, NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde stated that the civic body should not be solely blamed, as many pedestrians walk on the footpath without incident. However, RTI activist Anarjit Chauhan argued that NMMC should be held accountable for maintaining city footpaths, especially during the monsoon season when moss accumulation is common.
Chauhan also pointed out the inconsistency in the NMMC’s response, citing a past incident where the government machinery quickly acted when a relative of former BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta fell on a footpath.
