A city-based ENT surgeon has been defrauded of ₹8.6 crore in an elaborate investment scam. The 50-year-old doctor, who operates his own ENT clinic in KPHB, was targeted by cyber criminals after responding to a Facebook advertisement about stock trading three months ago.
According to the TG Cyber Security Bureau (CSB), the fraud began when the doctor, interested in stock trading, clicked on an ad and provided his details. He was subsequently contacted by individuals posing as executives from reputed firms like JP Morgan Chase Securities, Goldman Sachs, Man Group, and UBS Securities. These fraudsters, claiming to be sub-brokers for major institutions, convinced him to invest through their apps, promising high returns.
Initially, the doctor was able to make some withdrawals, which built his trust in the operation. However, after investing a total of ₹8,60,38,022 from May 2024, he encountered difficulties when attempting to withdraw his profits. The scammers demanded additional payments, citing a 20% fee on profits and 30% for short-term gain tax. It was only when these demands escalated that the doctor realized he had been scammed and filed a complaint with the CSB.
The case is currently under investigation, and officials are verifying the details of the transactions.
