A dramatic scene unfolded near Sims Park in Coonoor on Tuesday morning when an Asian palm civet, pursued by a pack of stray dogs, took refuge atop an electric pole, clinging close to a live power cable for nearly 30 minutes.
Forest personnel, led by Coonoor Forest Range Officer N Ravindranath, rushed to the spot at 10:15 am. They quickly dispersed the dogs and coordinated with TNPDCL staff to cut off electricity, aiming to rescue the small nocturnal mammal safely.
However, the clever civet had other plans. Before it could be captured, it crawled across the power line and leapt into a nearby tree, vanishing into the foliage.
Officials believe the civet, known for its fruit-loving and omnivorous diet, was drawn to the area by the seasonal bounty around Sims Park. Though classified as ‘Least Concern’ by the IUCN, forest staff urged residents and local vendors to alert them if the animal is spotted again within residential zones.
While the civet’s daring escape thrilled onlookers, forest officials remain vigilant to ensure its safety and prevent future conflicts.
