New Delhi: The Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) much-anticipated ‘Sansad Chalo’ march began in the national capital on Monday amid heavy security arrangements and parallel efforts by the Centre to open dialogue with the protest movement. Thousands of supporters gathered at Jantar Mantar before attempting to march towards Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session, while government representatives held talks with CJP leaders in an effort to defuse tensions.

The march comes after weeks of demonstrations led by students and young professionals over issues including alleged examination paper leaks, unemployment and demands for greater accountability in the education system. Authorities had declared the proposed march unauthorised and imposed tight security across central Delhi.

Heavy security around Parliament

Delhi Police deployed a large security presence around Parliament Street, Central Vista and adjoining areas ahead of the protest.

Barricades, water cannons, riot-control vehicles and additional police personnel were stationed at key locations to prevent protesters from entering restricted zones near Parliament. Traffic diversions were also put in place as a precautionary measure.

Police had earlier warned that any march towards Parliament without official permission would invite legal action.

Centre initiates dialogue with CJP

Even as the march commenced, the Centre signalled its willingness to engage with the movement.

CJP spokespersons were scheduled to meet Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda after the government reached out for discussions. CJP leaders said they were prepared for talks and indicated that the next steps would depend on the government’s response to their demands.

The talks are being viewed as the first formal engagement between the government and the organisation since the protests intensified.

Thousands of demonstrators assembled at Jantar Mantar carrying banners and raising slogans before beginning the march towards Parliament.

Clashes reported in parts of Delhi

As protesters attempted to move beyond barricaded areas, confrontations were reported between sections of the crowd and the police.

According to reports, police used tear gas and batons to disperse groups attempting to breach security barriers, while authorities maintained that force was used only to prevent unauthorised access to restricted areas. Protest organisers criticised the police action and alleged excessive force against demonstrators.

Focus shifts to government response

With talks now underway, attention has shifted to whether negotiations between the Centre and CJP leaders can ease the ongoing agitation.

While the organisation has expressed readiness for dialogue, it has maintained that its broader movement will continue until its key demands are addressed. The outcome of the discussions is expected to determine the next phase of the protest campaign.
